During the 7th inning of tonight’s game between the Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees, a fan fell from the upper deck and is in grave condition

With it being a rare sellout at Turner Field Saturday night, given how poorly the Atlanta Braves have played of late, this is heartbreaking news.  It didn’t even seem real when news first broke about the fall.  It’s happened before in other ballparks, but never before at Turner Field.

The Atlanta Braves left the following statement.

Certainly prayers are out for the fan that fell 50 feet and landed on the lower level.  It’s a whirlwind of confusion as to the status of the fallen victim.  There’s a photo of the spot where the fan landed but it’s too graphic for the faint of heart, particularly for baseball fans that have ventured to Turner Field over the last 19 seasons.

It was actually a pretty good game between the Yankees and Braves in a fun, rare interleague matchup reminding us of how great the 1990’s were to both organizations.  The Yankees ended up defeating the Braves 3-1, Atlanta’s 11th defeat in 12 games.  However the fall mars the outcome of the game without question.

Some fans feel disturbed by how little it affected the game.  A life is at stake and the game continued on as if nothing happened.  That doesn’t seem right.  Certainly everybody in attendance feels overwhelmed with confusion surrounding this very unfortunate event.

UPDATE: The fan that fell has died.
