The South Carolina Gamecocks football team will proudly wear a decal on their helmets all season as a sign of respect to the Charleston shooting victims

The horrid event shocked the nation when a young white supremacist opened fire on nine African-American men and women in a historic church in Charleston. One of the things we saw come from this unfortunate event was the State of South Carolina taking a lot of flack for displaying the Confederate Flag at the State’s Capital over 150 years since the end of the Civil War.

In a great public relations move to commemorate the lives lost in the tragedy, the state’s flagship university’s football team will have the helmet sticker prominently displayed on the Gamecocks’ helmets this fall.  The nine birds ascending from the palmetto tree represent the nine victims and their families.  South Carolina beat writer Josh Kendall of The State in Columbia took a screen shot of the decal.

This is a great move by the South Carolina Gamecocks to hopefully transcend this national tragedy.  It’s a fantastic gesture to unite all South Carolinians against hate, proving that love and unity will inevitably conquer evil.

Whether you cheer for the Gamecocks, the arch rival Clemson Tigers, any team in the SEC, or really any college program in the country, you have to respect South Carolina’s proactive solution to combat ongoing racial issues in this country.  A great deal of respect goes out to Gamecock Nation for this splendid decal honoring their fallen fellow South Carolinians.
