The Buffalo Bills have reportedly cut ties with running back Fred Jackson. According to Vic Carucci, the move is in order to trim the team’s roster down to 75.

Jackson has been hurt for a majority of the offseason, battling a hamstring injury. With the team trading for LeSean McCoy during the offseason, and then selecting Florida State running back Karlos Williams in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Jackson’s roster spot was on shaky footing heading into camp.

However, after McCoy suffered a hamstring injury of his own, Williams was hospitalized for an undisclosed injury, and Bryce Brown and Boobie Dixon were also dinged up, Jackson’s place on the roster appeared more secure. However, despite the blight at the position, new head coach Rex Ryan apparently felt that the veteran running back was expendable.

Jackson had been with the team since 2007, and took over starting duties in 2010 during a (different) time of transition for the Bills. He helped usher out the Marshawn Lynch Era, outlasted a dual-back system alongside C.J. Spiller, and rushed for over 5,600 yards and 30 touchdowns during his eight-year tenure. In total, Jackson amassed 8,286 total yards from scrimmage and 37 touchdowns for the club. At 33, with some tread left on the tires, he’ll likely be picked up by another team looking to bolster its running back stable heading into the season. At worst, he’ll be a midseason addition for a contender.
