Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas will likely need surgery to repair the tendon on his middle finger and will probably miss four to five weeks.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news and it’s a tough day in Jaguars country today.  Their prized free agent acquisition Julius Thomas, formerly of the Denver Broncos, is one of the Top 5 best tight ends in the NFL entering 2015.  This comes hours after the Jacksonville Jaguars traded longtime kicker and franchise points leader Josh Scobee to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Thomas’ injury occurred on the opening drive of the Jaguars’ first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Jacksonville’s two most talked about acquisitions this offseason, Julius Thomas and rookie OLB Dante Fowler, Jr., will miss at least a combined 20 games for the Jaguars this season.  Fowler tore his ACL in the first practice of Rookie Minicamp when OL Watts Dantzler brought the number three overall pick to the ground.

Julius Thomas should come back and play well for the Jaguars in the latter three quarters of the 2015 NFL Season, but there are obvious Fantasy Football implications with Thomas going under the knife.  He should start on most fantasy teams but should slip in many drafts across the country.  Perhaps snagging him in a later round could bode well for the craftiest of fantasy players.

While one would think that news of Julius Thomas’ probable surgery to repair a tendon in his finger would cripple the Jacksonville Jaguars offensively, second-year QB Blake Bortles has looked much improved in this year’s preseason play.  Bortles was 20-29 for 245 yards and a touchdown, also rushing for 38 yards on 4 carries against the Detroit Lions this past week.

Let’s hope that Bortles and company can stay afloat without their best receiving target for the first quarter of the 2015 Season.  Jacksonville needs to have an improved season for Head Coach Gus Bradley to stay with the Jaguars.  The Jaguars have not made the AFC Playoffs since 2007.
