Miami Hurricanes starting running back Gus Edwards will miss the entire 2015 season.

Bad news from the University of Miami. Running back Gus Edwards is out for the season after sustaining an injury during a scrimmage last week.

Miami initially believed Edwards’ injury was minor and that the 6-foot-2, 240-pound junior would be sidelined only briefly. Unfortunately, further tests have indicated that the unspecified injury will keep him out for the entire season, much to the dismay of coaches and fans.

Head coach Al Golden shared his feelings about the unexpected news, saying via the Associated Press, “He set a high standard and did a great job leading and being unselfish. We are tremendously disappointed for him, but we will be there with him on the road to recovery and anxiously await his return.”

Edwards’ absence will be a tough blow for the Hurricanes who finished with a losing record at 6-7 last year and lost several key players, including running back Duke Johnson, left tackle Ereck Flowers, tight end Clive Walford, and receiver Phillip Dorsett to the NFL Draft. Edwards started his career at Miami as a true freshman, tallying 338 yards on 66 attempts. Last season, he had a similar performance with 349 yards on 61 attempts. With 11 touchdowns during his two years on the team, Edwards was a reliable back with prodigious speed and vision on the field.

With Edwards sidelined for the season, true freshman Mark Walton and sophomore Joe Yearby, who tallied 509 yards and one touchdown last season, will compete for the starting spot. The Hurricanes are also transitioning high school quarterback Trayone Gray to running back. A raw talent, sophomore Gray scored a 10-yard touchdown on his first-ever career carry his freshman year, but only rushed for a total of 24-yards the entire season.
