New York Mets infielder Ruben Tejada scored an inside-the-park home run on Wednesday in one of the most bizarre plays of the MLB season.

An inside-the-park home run typically requires an impressive display of speed combined with a few lucky bounces. On Wednesday, however, New York Mets infielder Ruben Tejada rounded the bases on a line drive to right field that nearly any player could have scored on.

Tejada scorched the ball to Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown, who missed the catch by just a few feet. What happened next resulted in one of the strangest plays we have seen this season.

Brown slowed down as he approached the wall, but not fast enough, as he flipped over the fence in right field. Phillies second baseman Cesar Hernandez took off sprinting for the warning track to salvage the play, but Tejada cruised to a two-run inside-the-park home run.

The home run was just the 10th of Tejada’s six-year MLB career, and his third this season.

While it was not conventional, the play gave the Mets a boost during a time in which every game is crucial. They appear to have the National League East division title locked up, but they are still a game-and-a-half back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for home field advantage in the divisional series.

For Brown on the other hand, this blooper will only add to the disappointing season he is having. In addition to battling injuries and hitting just .229 on the season, he now has one of the most embarrassing highlights of the year to add to his resume.
