Redskins to keep Robert Griffin III on team
By Dani Bostick
The Washington Redskins will keep Robert Griffin III on the roster for the 2015 NFL season.
It is hard to keep up with all of the drama coming out of the Washington Redskins organization. First, quarterback Robert Griffin III was left in the preseason game against the Lions so long he ended up with a serious concussion. Then, head coach Jay Gruden announced Kirk Cousins would be the team’s starter, sparking rumors that Griffin’s time in Washington was coming to an end.
Saturday, Pro Football Talk reported Griffin would not be cut and would stay with the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2012 draft.
Despite rumors of conflict between the coaches, general manager, and team owner, reporter Jeff Darlington is reporting that head coach Jay Gruden, general manager Scot McCloughan, and owner Dan Snyder all agreed with the decision to keep Griffin on the squad. Time will tell if keeping as a backup the former Heisman trophy winner and great hope of the Redskins organization will be an unwelcome distraction for a team already frequently plagued by dysfunction and unwelcome media coverage.
It is likely the decision is less a vote of confidence in Griffin’s abilities, and more a financial decision reached because of the amount of guaranteed money Griffin would receive even if he were cut. It is a poorly kept secret that Griffin has been dissatisfied with the organization. Though Griffin blamed the mistake on an intern, it appeared his account “liked” a post on social media slamming the Redskins’ owner and front office.
