The Reggie Wayne era in New England was far more short lived than we thought as he won’t be on the Patriots 53- man roster.

UPDATE: It appears that Reggie Wayne asked for a release from the Patriots, with the reason for doing so being unclear at the moment.

Less than a few weeks after signing him to a contract, the New England Patriots are bringing the Reggie Wayne era to an end. Wayne was brought in a few weeks ago and signed to a contract, but there was clearly no guarantee that he was going to make the roster.

As reported by ESPN’s Josina Anderson, a Patriots source says that Reggie Wayne will not be on the final 53-man roster for Week 1.

This comes a huge surprise, as the Patriots seemingly brought Wayne in to be a target for Tom Brady and serve as a veteran presence on the roster. His signing also served as a hilarious troll to the Indianapolis Colts, but the joke was seemingly on the Patriots in the end.

It’s unclear what is going to happen two Wayne from here. He didn’t receive much attention at all in free agency after the Colts released him over the summer, and the Patriots came in late in the process to offer him a contract. It’s been a hard fall for one of the NFL’s best receivers, but all good things come to an end eventually. Wayne benefited from having two great quarterbacks in is career, as he went from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck, but suffered a serious ACL tear last season that ended his year and might have ended his career.

That’s not to say that it’s Wayne’s ACL that is keeping him from making the Patriots roster, but something has been deemed less than satisfactory, and this might be the end of the road for one of the past decade’s best receivers.
