According ESPN’s Buster Olney, New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira will miss the rest of the 2015 MLB Season due to an MRI revealing a fracture in his right leg

It looks like the New York Yankees are going to have to their playoff push without first baseman Mark Teixeira. Teixeira will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2015 MLB season due to an MRI revealing a fracture in his right leg. Tex has not played since August 26th, stating that his “leg doesn’t really work right now.”

Yankees GM Brian Cashman suspects that Teixeira injured the leg a while back, but it wasn’t until the MRI that the fracture was discovered.  In Tex’s absence, expect rookie 1B Greg Bird to fill in for the injured slugger.

With the New York Yankees sitting at 77-61 with 24 regular season games remaining, New York will have to carry on and attempt to take back the AL East lead now belonging to the Toronto Blue Jays, who have really turned it on in the second half.

New York still has possession of the first AL Wild Card spot, with a strong 4.5 game lead over the 2nd Wild Card team at the moment, the Texas Rangers (73-66).  New York is still 5.5 games ahead of the AL Central’s Minnesota Twins, who are on the outside looking in at an AL Playoff Berth.

In 83 at-bats for the New York Yankees this season, the 22-year-old 1B prospect Greg Bird has five homers and 17 RBI.  Perhaps Bird can give the Yankees’ offense a much-needed lift after the devastating news of the Mark Teixeira injury.  Maybe Bird’s .241 batting average and .319 on base percentage improve in extended playing time for New York.

The New York Yankees can certainly make some noise in the AL postseason, assuming they get past the AL Wild Card Game, but they are now going to have to do it without the bat and glove of Mark Teixeira.  Tough break for the Yankees today.
