Dez Bryant might be out longer than initially expected.

Dez Bryant exited Sunday night’s dramatic Cowboys victory in the fourth quarter with a foot injury. It was later revealed that Bryant had broken his foot, which carried an initial expected timetable for return of four to six weeks. As it turns out, that timeframe may have been a little aggressive.

On Tuesday morning, Adam Schefter reported that, after speaking with a doctor from ESPN, Bryant’s recovery time could more likely be closer to two to three months (8-12 weeks).

If Schefter’s source, Dr. Mark Adickes, is correct, that would put Bryant back on the field, at earliest, November 8 in a home contest against the Philadelphia Eagles. A 12-week recovery time would see Bryant returning in Week 13 on the road against the Washington Redskins.

It should bear noting that when discussing athletes all sensible timelines can be thrown out the window; a player’s return is essentially a crapshoot. Some guys miss one-third of a season thanks to turf toe. Adrian Peterson tore his ACL in 2011 and returned eight months later to have the second greatest season by a running back in NFL history. All bets are off when dealing with freakish athletes.

The Cowboys will play their first game of the season without Bryant this coming Sunday, September 20 on the road against the Eagles.
