Utah punt ruled re-kick after hitting Skycam wire (Video)
A Utah punt inadvertently struck a Skycam wire and had to be re-kicked
The Utah Utes were going about their business against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night, that business being absolutely thrashing Vernon Adams and company. It seemed like everything that the Utes were doing was working in their favor, except for maybe avoiding camera wiring on special teams.
In the third quarter, the Ducks earned a rare stop of the Utes and Utah got set to punt it away. However, when it went off the punter’s foot, it took a weird deflection in the air. As it turns out, it hit the Skycam wire on it’s way up:
The officials ruled that the punt had to be re-kicked considering that the Skycam wires aren’t part of the field of play. However, that doesn’t make it any less of a surreal experience.
This isn’t a huge travesty or anything largely detrimental to the aura of college football, but it’s something that the NCAA and television networks will likely have to look into after this. You can’t have camera wiring interfering with games like this, even if they do provide cool aerial shots of the action. I’m sure there will be a solution agreed upon sometime in the very near future after this wire’s blocked punt.
