Several of the nation’s Top 25 college football teams are riding high after big wins or hanging their heads following disappointing losses. What teams should on upset alert due to the hangover effect?

When anticipating upsets in college football – whether for fun or for profit – there are several things one should be aware of. First and foremost, find out what ranked and favored teams are playing on the road in tough environments. That’s why home underdogs are generally considered to be among your best bets. Put a star by games played week nights since such matchups messes with a team’s regular preparation schedule.

Another item to consider is the hangover effect. How will a team respond following a huge win (or in some cases, a humiliating loss)? Last week, several teams across the country picked up huge wins – Florida and Clemson come to mind – but others were blown out on the big stage (looking at you, Georgia). Every coach says he and his team “takes it one game at a time,” but big wins and big losses tend to linger.

If a team spends too much time celebrating the glory they achieved last week, or if they can’t shake the feeling of embarrassment and disappointment from a missed opportunity, it impacts their preparation for the next team on the schedule, and that can show up on Saturdays. Let’s explore five teams on upset alert in Week 6.
