Why won’t the ‘Keep Al Golden’ banner fly over Florida State-Miami game?

Florida State fans who hoped to see the planned “Keep Al Golden” banner fly over today’s FSU-Miami game may be disappointed.

In anticipation of today’s Florida State vs Miami game, the FSU fans have preached for Miami to stick with head coach Al Golden. As one could guess, it’s for all the hilariously wrong reasons.

A few weeks ago, FSU fans started a GoFundMe page titled “Keep Al Golden Banner campaign.” The description for this stated the following:

"Al Golden has done a terrific job in keeping Miami irrelevant, Cane fans want him gone. However in Tallahassee we love Coach Golden, that’s why we want to show our love in 3 weeks when the canes come to Tallahassee, with a banner that will fly over the stadium…for an hour."

Seminole fans thought this was a terrific idea for the Miami game and they nearly accomplished this feat. However, it the banner will not be flown over the field during today’s contest.

According to Slater Scoops, the creator of the GoFundMe page, Joseph Johnson, was pressured by alumni and administration from Miami and FSU to not fly the banner. This is despite the page saying the banner will not fly over the field due to a “scheduling conflict with the aerial sign company.” The post also notes that the money raised will be donated to a charity.

Not having this banner fly over today’s game will likely satisfy both FSU and Miami’s administrations, but it doesn’t take away that Golden has struggled as the latter’s coach. Despite being 3-1 this season, Golden has not led Miami to more than 9 wins in a season during his first four years. If he doesn’t reach a prominent bowl game this season, Miami may not be keeping Golden for much longer.
