Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida is training at AKA for his transition to MMA.

Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida has accomplished just about all there is to accomplish in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With 13 gold medals from various world championships atop a long list of accolades, Almeida is regarded as one of the best to ever compete in the sport.

While his strong relationship with BJJ is likely not completely over, Almeida has begun his transition into the MMA world. He recently signed to Dominance MMA, Ali Abdelaziz’s management company which oversees competitive fighters across numerous professional promotions including the UFC.

Almeida got right to work and has begun training for his MMA debut while getting some advice from two of the best in the business. He recently posted a series of pictures on Instagram of him training at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) with former UFC champions Daniel Cormier and Luke Rockhold.

Almeida has as much experience as anyone in martial arts on the ground, and with some lessons from Cormier and Rockhold, he is likely set for a great MMA debut in the near future. He is familiar with the pressures of competition on some of the world’s biggest stages which will undoubtedly help him on his MMA journey.

A grappling match between Almeida and former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum is set for Sept. 6 at BJJBET. Werdum made quick work of Alexander Gustafsson recently at UFC Fight Island 3, locking in an armbar halfway through the first round to secure his 12th submission victory in his professional MMA career. Werdum is a highly respected BJJ black belt as is Almeida, and it should be a high-level match between two veterans of the sport.

Dominance MMA oversees many UFC fighters, including Khabib Nurmagomedov and Kamaru Usman who both currently hold UFC belts. Almeida is in good hands in terms of management, and if he has a smooth transition to MMA he may very well be a name to look out for in a professional promotion before long.
