Golden State Warriors interim head coach Luke Walton had his car stolen this weekend

Everything is coming up aces for the Golden State Warriors these days, even with head coach Steve Kerr still on leave after undergoing back surgery in the preseason. The Warriors are a historic 15-0 to start the 2015-16 NBA season with Luke Walton filling in as the interim head coach of the Stephen Curry led team. Walton has done a phenomenal job with the team on the court in Kerr’s absence, however, he’s apparently had a bit of trouble off of it.

On Monday afternoon, an Oakland man was arrested for a carjacking involving a 74-year-old woman after leading the police on a chase before crashing the stolen vehicle. Upon his arrest, the suspect was also charged in the theft of Walton’s 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL 450, according to Inside Bay area.

According to the report, Walton’s vehicle was stolen from his home on Nov. 17 and was later found crashed in another area of Oakland. The authorities do not believe that the suspect knew that he was stealing Walton’s car, but rather that the Warriors interim head coach was simply a random victim of the crime.

It’s easy to make light of Walton’s situation; there’s something inherently funny about Walton, a former player now coaching a historically great NBA team, having his car taken and then wrecked. Perhaps it’s how strongly the crime clashes with his success with Golden State that adds to the humor.

However, considering the carjacking that led to the suspect’s arrest, Walton is quite lucky that it was only it was his car that was damaged. The 74-year-old woman was beaten with a blunt object before the suspect and a still-at-large accomplice stole her vehicle. She was then taken to the hospital prior to the arrest being made. Had Walton been near his vehicle, that too could have been his fate. Luckily, it wasn’t. Still, we hope that the victim of the violent carjacking moves on to a smooth recovery after this.
