The Iron Bowl was a hard-fought rivalry affair, but Alabama ultimately prevailed over Auburn.

In terms of performance this season and shear talent, the Alabama Crimson Tide are in a separate class than the Auburn Tigers. Alabama looked to pick up their 11th win of the season and advance to the SEC Championship game while Auburn simply looked to pull of a huge upset with their seventh victory of the season. However, things like records and talent don’t matter when it comes to one of the best rivalries in college football in the Iron Bowl.

This game was gritty from the get-go with the first six scores of the game coming from the kickers and the Crimson Tide jumping out to a 12-6 lead. The first offensive touchdown of the game didn’t come until the third quarter when Alabama quarterback Jake Coker made an absolutely unreal play to escape pressure and connect with ArDarius Stewart to push the lead to 19-6. However, Jeremy Johnson and the Tigers answered quickly on an improbable 77-yard touchdown catch.

It was more of a defensive struggle after that, though, with neither offense being able to put together any drives of consequence. Late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers had a chance to drive only down nine points, but two dropped passes killed the drive and Auburn turned the ball over on downs. Alabama continued to feed Derrick Henry, who was remarkable in this game, and he finally broke loose and got into the end zone with less than a minute remaining to seal the Iron Bowl win and carry the Tide to the SEC Championship game next week.

Three stars

Derrick Henry set the single-season Alabama rushing record in this game, breaking Trent Richardson’s mark. He finished the day with a ridiculous 46 carries for 271 yards and, of course, the touchdown to seal the win late in the fourth quarter.

Jake Coker came up huge for the Crimson Tide in this game, escaping pressure and playing with tremendous toughness all day long on a big stage. He finished the day with 179 yards passing and a touchdown and 13 huge rushing yards for Alabama.

Adam Griffith is the Alabama kicker and college kickers don’t get a whole lot of love these days. However, he deserves it as he was 5-5 on field goal attempts in the Iron Bowl, including three from 40-plus yards and a 50-yarder.

Highlights

Odds

The Alabama Crimson Tide came into this contest as 14.5-point favorites and Henry’s late score gave them the cover. In a defensive struggle filled with a ton of field goals, the two teams combined to hit the under on 48.5 points.
