Baylor and TCU battled the elements, but the Horned Frogs prevailed in an ugly double-overtime game

If you were looking for the offensive shootout that seemed inevitable with the Baylor Bears facing the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday night in Amon G. Carter Stadium, then you were sorely disappointed. After a lightning delay pushed back the kickoff, the weather let up a bit and there were touchdowns on the first three drives of the game. Then the heavy rain started to come down and everything went awry. Offenses became almost irrelevant in the downpour with the only other touchdown after the first quarter coming off of a 55-yard fumble return by TCU.

Honestly, it was disappointing to see two offenses that have proven to be the most exciting units in the country reduced to not being able to even get a first down because of the rain. There was so much anticipation and hype leading up to this game, no doubt due to the instant classic the matchup produced last year, and the 2015 edition of the rivalry wound up being a complete dud because of thunderstorms.

As for the result, the score held at 14-14 from 12:55 left in the second quarter until the end of regulation and the foray into overtime. Baylor got the ball first in the extra period and they ran the ball effectively enough to go 25 yards and score a touchdown on a jump pass to Devin Chafin. TCU had their shot and converted with a Trevone Boykin touchdown. The Frogs then scored on their next drive with a pass from Boykin to KaVontae Turpin. Baylor’s next drive came down to a fourth down, but they couldn’t convert as Devin Chafin was stuffed, effectively ending Baylor’s College Football Playoff chances.

Three stars

Josh Carraway was part of the hungry TCU pass-rush that caused Chris Johnson a ton of problems in the rain on Friday night and also returned a Johnson fumble 55 yards for a touchdown.

Devin Chafin was arguably the most consistent offensive threat in an ugly offensive game. He carried the ball 26 times for 119 yards and the first two Baylor touchdowns and a receiving touchdown in overtime.

Both punters get a star because they saw more action than anyone else in this game. Ice those legs, Drew Galitz and Ethan Perry.

Highlights

Odds

Baylor were 1.5-point favorites in this game, which they failed to cover in the loss. The over/under for this game was set for 79 points and the weather ruined any chance of coming close to that; the under won comfortably.

Next Week

TCU’s regular season is done and they will now wait to learn what bowl game they will be a part of in the postseason.

Baylor still has one Big 12 matchup remaining on their schedule as they’ll be at home against the Texas Longhorns next week.
