Justin Fuente will reportedly be the next Virginia Tech head coach and he’ll be keeping Bud Foster

The search for the Frank Beamer replacement with the Virginia Tech Hokies seems to have come to a close. According to Brody Logan of FOX 5 in DC, the team will name current Memphis Tigers head coach Justin Fuente as the new head man in Blacksburg.

To make the deal a little sweeter for Fuente, and Virginia Tech as well, longtime defensive coordinator Bud Foster will indeed be staying on the staff to help turn this program back around.

It is a bit surprising, considering that many assumed that when Beamer was ready to call it a career, the reins would be turned directly over to Foster, who has been with the head coach throughout his entire tenure. That didn’t end up being the case, but Foster will be sticking around anyway, which is not a bad thing.

Fuente has been one of the hottest names on the market, and there’s no doubt that there’s a lot of programs out there a little disappointed at the moment to hear this news. In four years he turned this Memphis program from a laughing stock to a team that was in some hypothetical College Football Playoff discussions a few weeks ago out of the AAC. Even heading into the year it was expected that this would be the last he would spend at Memphis, and this turned out to be the case.

Just demolishing SMU at the moment in their regular season closer, the Tigers and Fuente will finish the regular season at 9-3 by the time the day is over.

Frank Beamer announced a few weeks ago that he would be stepping down as the Hokies head coach following a rather successful 29-year run.
