A massive hit on a kick return during Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State caused paint to fly off the helmets

The Oklahoma Sooners traveled to Stillwater for Bedlam against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday night in one of the most heated rivalries in all of college football. Bedlam really needs no introduction or explanation of what makes it so fierce, but if you require one a big hit on a first-quarter kick return pretty much summed it up.

Oklahoma returner Alex Ross was looking for space to run up the field following a Cowboys touchdown and kickoff, but Oklahoma State redshirt junior Devante Averette came in and laid a huge hit. The hit was big, in fact, that it sent the paint shattering off of Ross’ helmet:

There’s obviously helmet-to-helmet contact on that hit, but no penalty was caused as Ross ducked his head into the hit. Regardless, that’s a violent collision if it’s hard enough to send the paint flying like that.

Though these two Big 12 teams are known more for their explosive offenses, things get a little more physical in a rivalry matchup of this magnitude as the conference title is on the line in Stillwater. Testiness, big hits, and general disdain are foregone conclusions when it comes to Bedlam, though sending paint flying off of a helmet is taking it to another level..
