Mike London has stepped down from his position as Virginia’s head football coach.

Mike London is no longer the head football coach at the University of Virginia. On Sunday morning, one day following a 23-20 defeat to rival Virginia Tech (his team’s eighth loss of the season), London met with athletic director Craig Littlepage and then stepped down from his position.

Virginia released the following statement regarding London’s departure:

"“Mike London has been an outstanding representative of the University of Virginia. During his tenure, Mike created a positive culture for our student-athletes to develop as young men, who improved each year in the classroom and represented us very well in the community. Mike was a tremendous mentor for his players and many of our coaches. His ability to inspire others helped our program establish great relationships among the high school football coaches in the state and he has been a tremendous ambassador for the University. We are thankful for Mike’s numerous contributions representing the University and Virginia athletics.”"

In six seasons with the Cavaliers, London only recorded one winning record – an 8-5 campaign in 2011 that resulted in a Chick-fil-A Bowl loss and a second place finish in the ACC Coastal. His overall record in Charlottesville was 27-46, with a conference mark of 14-34.

The Wahoos now join a crowded pool of coaching vacancies that includes the likes of ACC Coastal Division rival Miami, former ACC rival Maryland, nearby South Carolina and the USC Trojans. Interestingly, on Saturday, the same day that Virginia lost to Tech, word broke that the Hokies would replace outgoing Frank Beamer with Memphis head coach Justin Fuente, one of the hottest names on the market.
