The USC Trojans have removed the interim tag on head coach Clay Helton, as he will be the permanent head coach of the USC football team.

According to the official Twitter account of the USC Trojans athletic department, athletic director Pat Haden has removed the interim tag from coach Clay Helton and he will remain the head coach of the football team for the foreseeable future.

Haden removed himself from his duties with the College Football Playoff Selection Committee several weeks ago for both health reasons and to ensure that he made the best decision with regards to the highly coveted vacant USC Trojans football head coaching job.

Since taking over for Steve Sarkisian a few months ago, Clay Helton has led the Trojans to a Pac-12 South Division title and an opportunity to play for a Pac-12 Championship versus major rival Stanford in Santa Clara, California this upcoming weekend.

Pat Haden is a former starting quarterback for the Trojans and oversaw the last several, albeit brief, coaching regimes in Los Angeles. He fired Lane Kiffin on the tarmac after an embarrassing loss in 2013 to Arizona State.

Haden didn’t retain the popular player’s coach Ed Orgeron in 2013, siding to hire former USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian away from the Washington Huskies in 2014. He then fired Sarkisian mid-season in 2015 due to substance abuse issues surrounding the program’s then head coach.

It seems as though both the players and the fans of the USC Trojans like that Haden removed the interim tag from Clay Helton, making him the permanent head coach of the football team. Helton led the Trojans to an 8-4 (6-3) season and will be the underdog to 10-2 (8-1) Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship this week.
