UCF has hired Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost as the program’s new head football coach.

Only three days past college football’s regular season finale and the chips are already starting to fall into place for high-profile coaching positions. The latest comes from Orlando, Florida, where the UCF Knights have hired Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator Scott Frost to be the program’s newest head coach.

Frost’s hiring is really intriguing and may have just made the roadmap of college football in Florida a lot more fun. During his three year’s as Oregon’s OC, Frost oversaw prolific offenses. Under his watch the Ducks never averaged less than 43.2 points or 547 yards per game.

He will be expected to come in and immediately jumpstart a dormant Knights offense in desperate need of recitation. This past year – only two seasons removed from a Fiesta Bowl victory – the Knights went winless and ranked last nationally in total offense (268.4 yards per game), and No. 126 in points per game (13.9).

By hiring Frost, UCF has officially planted its flag as a gadfly to the recruiting triumvirate of Florida, FSU and Miami. Former head coach George O’Leary proved that it’s possible to win big at Central Florida when given the talent. Frost is young, vibrant and brings a dynamic style of play to Orlando. He won’t immediately be able to waltz down into South Florida and pluck recruits away from the state’s big boys, but watch for him to start shaking branches. A steal here, a surprise there and look out for that Turnpike between Orlando and Miami to open up a bit. Uncertainty surrounding Miami’s program only magnifies as much.

When this entire coaching carousel has been completed, we might be stepping away saying that UCF made the biggest splash. The administration knew what its program needed, understood the potential of their market, swung for the fences and hit their mark.
