Gregg Popovich and an injured Tim Duncan shared a laugh at Mavs big man Salah Mejri talking trash trailing by 20

The San Antonio Spurs jumped out to a huge lead on the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night, even with Tim Duncan still out of the lineup for the contest. The Spurs were up 27-12 after the first quarter and were only adding to that lead as the game wore on. However, apparently no one told Mavericks reserve center Salah Mejri that he probably shouldn’t taunt the opposing team when down by 20 points or else they might laugh at you.

Mejri made a play for the Mavericks in the second quarter and the big man was amped about his efforts. Subsequently, Mejri ran by the Spurs bench and apparently started talking trash. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was far from heated over that, though, as he and Duncan actually just shared a laugh at the expense of the Mavericks center:

Though I’m not an expert in lip-reading, it really looks like Pop either says that he doesn’t know what that was all about or that he doesn’t know who Mejri is while he laughs about the taunting. Either way, it’s definitely a blow to the dignity of the Mavericks big man.

Even if it might seem a bit mean for two salty old NBA veterans—a coach and a player—to laugh at a young guy who’s down by 20 points, the friendship between Pop and Duncan is one of the greatest things in the world and it’s a shame that we only have a few more years of it left. That just means we have to appreciate moments like this even more than we already do.
