Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was awful in Super Bowl 50, then punked out and walked away from the postgame podium.

All week leading up to Super Bowl 50, we were subjected to Cam Newton telling everybody how great he was. On Saturday, Newton was justifiably awarded the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player honors. Om Sunday, Newton went out and stunk up Levi’s Stadium against the Denver Broncos, completing 18-of-41 passes for 265 yards and an interception with two lost fumbles.

After the game, Newton was understandably frustrated and eventually walked away early from his postgame podium after being asked about the loss. While Newton was ticked off about his play and the performance of his team, that is absurd. Be a man and stand up, take the heat and deal with the defeat like an adult.

Newton is one of the best players in the NFL but he has some maturing to do. If the Panthers had won, he would have been dabbing all over the field and getting his mug into every camera lens around. Instead, Newton was sulking and barely answering questions.

This is a league MVP, a collegiate national champion and a Heisman Trophy winner. He’s the leader of his team. While the moment was brutal, Newton has to step up and take charge, shoeing his team that he’s tough regardless of the circumstance.
