No. 8 Michigan State Spartans vs No. 18 Purdue Boilermakers

Michigan State is back inside the top 10 for the first time since a three-game losing streak knocked them out three weeks ago. The Spartans have been tearing apart the opposition over the past four games, averaging each of the wins by 22.5 points and beating No. 7 Maryland and rival Michigan, on the road, in the process.

Denzel Valentine is coming off his third Big Ten player of the week award of the year and he’s a solid national player of the year candidate for 2015-16. The senior guard is averaging 18.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists — he’s constantly on triple-double watch. Bryn Forbes is another key factor in the Spartans’ success, shooting over 50 percent from three-point range and averaging 14.3 points per game.

There might be some bad blood in the air, even though Tom Izzo is downplaying it, as Purdue reeled Caleb Swanigan away from the Spartans after he had committed to Michigan State in May of 2015. The freshman big man decommitted shortly after and then chose the Boilermakers. Matt Painter’s team has reaped the benefits of the swipe, putting together a 19-5 start to the year.

Swanigan might be just fourth on the team in scoring, but the former McDonald’s All-American is averaging nearly a double-double with 9.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Alongside Swanigan in the post is senior big man A.J. Hammons who has passed up the NBA multiple times to come back to Purdue. He’s putting up 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds.
