Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook could be interested in playing for the New York Knicks

The New York Knicks have long needed a great point guard. They already have an elite forward in Carmelo Anthony and a quickly rising star in Kristaps Porzingis, but the team hasn’t had an elite point guard in years. That might be changing in 2017.

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook could be interested in joining the team when he becomes a free agent after the 2016-2017 season, which should have Knicks fans pretty excited.

From Yahoo Sports:

"The Knicks have a real chance to sell Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook in 2017—New York and (forward Kristaps) Porzingis have his attention, yes—and (team president Phil) Jackson ought to start constructing an elite coaching staff to begin that process with Westbrook and with free agents beyond him."

Playing for the NBA’s biggest market has to be a fascinating and intriguing option for Westbrook. Russell has had to live in the shadow of Kevin Durant throughout his career with the Thunder, and he would be the star and the toast of the town in the Big Apple. Westbrook would be joining an exciting team and would be running an offense that could be tailor made to him.

The Knicks will certainly have the cap space to make a big move after the 2016-2017 season. Signing Westbrook would make them an immediate title contender. Westbrook is averaging 24.1 points per game, 10.0 assists per game, and 7.6 rebounds per game this season as of February 9th.
