The Ottawa Senators have acquired defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Maple Leafs in a nine-player deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman and captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators. There are a ton of pieces going both ways as nine total players are involved in this trade and no salary is being retained by either team in this deal.

The Senators get Dion Phaneuf, forward Matt Frattin, forward Casey Bailey, forward Ryan Rupert and defensive prospect Cody Donaghey. Frattin, Bailey, Rupert, and Donaghey are likely involved in the trade to ensure that both teams could have 50 players under contract. The Leafs were very close to the 50-contract limit so they had to create room for the players involved. The Maple Leafs will be getting defenseman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg and Ottawa’s second round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Cowen has four points in 37 games this season for the Senators. He’s the major player involved in this trade as Greening is a 29-year-old forward who has only played in one NHL game. Michalek is currently on the long-term injured reserve list, while Lindberg is a 20-year-old prospect who has 22 points in 34 games for the Senators.

The Senators get a good defenseman who is under contract for quite some time. Phaneuf should help stabilize the Senators defense, while the Leafs mainly get salary relief as well as draft picks and a valuable prospect.

Toronto is the clear winner in this trade because they are no longer responsible for Phaneuf’s contract.
