The city of Houston hopes to land the Pro Bowl in 2017 as a prelude to the Super Bowl they will be hosting

The city of Houston hopes to do more than just host Super Bowl LI in 2017. The mayor of the city, Sylvester Turner, recently submitted a proposal to host the Pro Bowl during the week that precedes the championship game.

According to Turner, having both games in the same city is a win-win for all parties involved.

"“The Pro Bowl has historically been held in Hawaii, but I know the NFL is trying to consolidate their Super Bowl experience with the Pro Bowl. They’d like them to be held in the same city. It just makes it much easier for everybody who’s traveling who’s affiliated with the city and the Super Bowl."

While the game is typically held in Hawaii, there have been exceptions before. In 2015 both events were held in Glendale, Arizona and in 2010 Miami was able to play host to both games.

It would make sense for the fan experience to incorporate the All-Star showing to all the action of the big game, but it could result in even less players wanting to participate. As it stands, the Pro Bowl is often full of alternates and without the lure of a week-long vacation in Hawaii, it could be that much more difficult to get the marquee players to partake.

The NFL is expected to decide on a city in the spring. Other than Houston, Hawaii still hopes to host the game as does Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
