Here is all the information you need to know for the Kansas City Chiefs’ crucial 2016 offseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs are a team that is widely underrated in the national media. They are often overlooked in favor of their AFC West rivals and Super Bowl champions Denver Broncos, not fancied in comparison to the Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger led Patriots and Steelers, and commonly misunderstood as a team. However, after finally breaking the 22-year playoff duck with a shutout win over the Houston Texans, the Chiefs are on the up, and they will be targeting even more postseason success once again next year.

To do so, general manager John Dorsey will have to be a very busy man. The Chiefs have multiple free agents, some in very key areas, and also have holes to fill in the roster. One positive heading into the 2016 offseason is the cap situation. For years, Kansas City has had cap issues. However, Dorsey has done a truly terrific job to produce a quality roster while also creating cap room.

Currently, Kansas City is scheduled to have around $30 million in cap room to play with. This is the 10th best in the NFL, per OverTheCap, and does put the organization in a position to make some moves over the next few months. Nonetheless, Dorsey will need most of this cap space to re-sign key free agents if he is to again produce a quality roster.

Andy Reid has been much maligned for his inconsistent play calling and poor time management. However, to turn a 1-5 side into a play off winning caliber team after losing their best offensive player to injury is a remarkable coaching achievement and many Chiefs’ fans will be hoping that Reid can continue the momentum heading into 2016.

The Chiefs were ultimately ousted by the New England Patriots and Tom Brady’s quick release, but significant injuries to Justin Houston, Tamba Hali and Jeremy Maclin limited the ability of the side. While injuries are not a valid excuse for the loss, they do illustrate the quality of this roster, and if Dorsey can have another good offseason, the Chiefs could well be shooting down Super Bowl LI.
