Gregg Popovich tried to defend Kobe Bryant.

The San Antonio Spurs are having a great year, only eclipsed by the Golden State Warriors. Perhaps San Anotnio’s success has head coach Gregg Popovich in a good mood, as evidenced on Saturday afternoon. As head coahc of the NBA Western Conference All-Stars, Popovich is in Toronto for the weekend with Kobe Bryant as one of his charges. Apparently, Popovich wanted to try and defend Bryant.

It’s great to see this. Popovich is always so serious and stoic, but he’s letting himself enjoy the moment with one of the greatest players to ever lace up the kicks.

Bryant is wrapping up his career this season and despite being one of the worst players in the league at this point, was rightfully voted into the Al-Star Game. Bryant has played his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers and has waged some terrific battles with Popovich and his Spurs.

Since both came into the league in the late 1990s, Popovich has coached San Antonio to five NBA championships with Bryant winning another five of his own in Los Angeles. Soon enough, Bryant will be gone and the Lakers will still be one of the worst teams in the NBA, run by the overwhelmed Jim Buss.
