The Sprint Unlimited officially kicks off the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

It may be below freezing in much of the country as Winter hits hard, but the NASCAR season is about to begin. It’s been a long break for drivers and fans alike since Kyle Busch won his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship back in November. 2016 is a new season as Busch looks to repeat and the other drivers try to improve upon last season’s results.

That chance to do better will come with the season’s first event, the Sprint Unlimited, Matt Kenseth won last year’s event under the new qualifying format. All 16 drivers who made the Chase last year automatically qualify for the event in addition to those who won a pole position in knockout qualifying, Sprint Unlimited winners from past seasons as long as they attempted to qualify for any of the 2015 races, and drivers who started in the front row of previous Daytona 500 races.

If the 25-car field isn’t filled by those qualifying requirements, the drivers highest in the standings who haven’t already been entered into the race are added. The previous season’s standings are also used if a driver who made the event elects to not participate in the Sprint Unlimited, which wouldn’t be to shocking with Daytona 500 qualifying occurring a day later. Yet, it would be advantageous for them to participate so they get a feel for the Daytona track, which they will log hundreds of miles on later in the month.

The 75-lap race will be aired on FOX and available online for those who can’t watch it on their television. This event should pump up the fans even more who are itching to see live racing on television for the first time in almost three months.
