No. 24 Texas Longhorns vs No. 14 Iowa State Cyclones

When you look at what first-year head coach Shaka Smart has done for the Texas Longhorns, it’s evident he will have a home in Austin for as long as he wants. Turning a program which struggled to make any noise in the Big 12 over the past few years under Rick Barnes into one that is ranked No. 24 and playing close games against Kansas and Oklahoma is nothing short of unbelievable.

Isaiah Taylor is Smart’s top player to this point in the season, averaging a team-high 15.4 points and 4.9 assists per game. Playing without senior center Cameron Ridley has taken its toll, though, as the Longhorns don’t have quite as much post depth as most teams, proven by just 36 rebounds per game.

Iowa State, on the other hand, has hit a dry spell, to say the least. The Cyclones, in their first year without head coach Fred Hoiberg who bolted for the NBA, have lost three of four games. One of the losses, against West Virginia, hurt the most since it was at home and Iowa State prides itself on home court advantage. It’s time to rebound.

Senior leader Georges Niang is the star of the team, putting up 19.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Monte Morris has been a great complementary piece, averaging 14.8 points and 7.2 assists per game, looking like one of the top point guards in the entire conference. This team has depth and its not afraid to use it.
