Who will be on the pole at the 2016 Daytona 500?

The Daytona 500 is just a week away and on Sunday, the best drivers in NASCAR competed for a chance to sit on the pole for next Sunday’s race. There were plenty of the usual suspects near the top, but there were also some surprising names in the mix.

It was also a bad day for some of last year’s best drivers. Kevin Harvick had an average run and only qualified in the 16th position. For other championship finalist Martin Truex Jr., it was an even more strange day on Sunday.

Truex Jr. had issues with his roof flap and could not present his car in the necessary five-minute window to NASCAR officials. As a result, Truex Jr. had to take his car to the back and could not qualify on the day. Truex Jr. will now have to start at the back of the Can-Am Duel this week for his shot to compete in the Daytona 500.

In his first year driving the No. 24, Chase Elliott put on a strong showing in the car that was made famous by Jeff Gordon. At the end of the day, it was Elliott winning his first career Daytona 500 pole. It’s also the second year in a row that the No. 24 will be starting the Daytona 500.
