The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that forward Andrej Nestrasil will miss the rest of the regular season with a fractured vertebra

The Carolina Hurricanes made a tiny waiver claim in 2014 when they took forward Andrej Nestrasil from the Detroit Red Wings. No one thought much of it then. Netrasil wound up being an important part of the Hurricanes and their success so far this season.

However, his season is over as he fractured his vertebra against the Toronto Maple Leafs after suffering a hit from Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri.

Nestrasil was providing some solid play for a Carolina team in desperate need of offense. The 25-year-old had nine goals and 23 points on the year, something that garnered some attention for such a yung player. Now, he looks to carry that momentum over into 2016-17.

That’s a heartbreaking injury for the Hurricanes who were going to rely on him to replace Kris Versteeg. It would have been an excellent and well deserved chance for him to get more playing time. Netrasil grew into one of Carolina’s most valuable power play options despite limited time. He’s been one of the best feel good stories in the NHL this season.

Recovering from a fractured vertebra is a tough thing. However, he should return fully healthy next season assuming that there are no complications. Andrej Nestrasil is an important part of the Hurricanes moving forward because of his versatility, skill, and competitive edge.
