In a recent interview, Floyd Mayweather insisted that Gennady Golovkin should beat Andre Ward before fighting him.

Even though Floyd Mayweather is retired, most people believe that he will fight again. Of course, all he wants to do is enjoy retirement, but that’s hard to do when reporters are constantly asking him questions about a comeback.

While many wanted him to face Gennady Golovkin who is terrorizing the middleweight division, Triple G’s trainer Abel Sanchez seemingly added fuel to that fire when he stated that Floyd was “laying the groundwork” for a comeback fight.

Mayweather denied that report, but didn’t rule out a Golovkin fight completely. In fact, he had a specific request for Triple G if he wants to fight him, per FightHype.

He stated:

"I told Triple G what he had to do if he wants a fight with me. He’s gotta call out Andre Ward, beat Andre Ward, and then I’ll fight him. I haven’t seen him call out Andre Ward yet."

It’s a pretty odd request considering Mayweather himself never fought Andre Ward. It’s also going to be pretty difficult to make that fight happen considering that Ward fights at light heavyweight, which is a full 15 pounds above Golovkin’s weight class. He certainly has the right idea in making Golovkin a big name first — for as talented a fighter as he is, he only has one pay-per-view to his name which did 150,000 buys. A superfight with Andre Ward, who is about to prepare for a comeback fight, would certainly boost his name value, and a comeback bout for Mayweather against the winner of that fight would do huge numbers at the box office.

Mayweather does have an opponent in mind if he wants to come back, but it’s not who you would think. He stated in the same interview that he wants to fight Danny Garcia:

"You look at Danny Garcia, he’s undefeated and he’s a world champion. If I’m going to fight a guy, it’s going to be a world champion."

Mayweather was always accused of cherry-picking his opponents, and if he came back against Danny Garcia instead of either Ward or Golovkin, that would only further prove that point.

He could also just be throwing more shade at Amir Khan, who has tried to campaign for a Mayweather fight for a long time yet lost to Garcia. Danny Garcia currently holds one of the welterweight belts that was vacated following Mayweather’s retirement, which is likely the primary motivation behind his choice of opponent.
