The Icon Sting officially retired from wrestling as part of his WWE Hall of Fame speech

In the history of professional wrestling, there haven’t been many superstars or performer that have made quite the impact that Sting has, be it in WCW, TNA, or WWE. That’s why it was such a deserved and overdue honor to have inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016 as the headliner of his class. However, his induction came with bad news.

After waxing poetic about wrestling, the fans, his peers, and his career for quite a while during his speech at the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony. Things got quite somber and the mood palpably changed. That’s because Sting was trying to muster up the strength for his next words as he looked out into the crowd and, in a quite beautiful manner, announced his retirement from pro wrestling:

"Newly inducted into the @WWE Hall of Fame, @STING announces his retirement from the ring. #WWEHOF #ThankYouSting https://t.co/5ru7YswgVI— WWE (@WWE) April 3, 2016"

To be honest, this isn’t wholly unexpected considering that Sting has been out of action since getting injured in a match against Seth Rollins way back at 2015 Night of Champions. Moreover, Sting said in an interview after the injury and after undergoing tests that doctors mentioned cervical spinal stenosis, the same neck injury that forced Edge into retirement.

There had been rumors as well that Sting was done in WWE and professional wrestling, but he had denied them up until Saturday night at the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony.

Though it’s a shame that we’ll never see Sting vs Undertaker or Sting ever wrestle again, you can’t do anything but respect the man for his incredible career in the ring and let him ride off into the sunset as a hero after entering the WWE Hall of Fame.
