With spring practice just around the corner, it’s time to examine college football’s top 10 contenders for the Heisman Trophy this year.

There’s a special buzz around college campuses this time of year – and it’s not just the type that accompanies spring break celebrations. Over the next eight weeks, the vast majority of college football programs will undergo annual spring practices, which marks the unofficial beginning of the 2016-2017 season. Some might say the season begins with National Signing Day, and still others will contest that the season never truly begins or ends these days what with ongoing recruiting, pro days, and the 24/7 media coverage this nation devotes to our favorite sport.

But spring practices are the first real opportunity to catch a glimpse of what the future may hold in store for every team around the country, and it’s an exciting time for coaches, players, and for fans. Between the unknown promise of early-enrollees and the grizzled wisdom of multi-year starting seniors, there lies 100 yards of hopes, dreams, and expectations, while hundreds of thousands of people dare to wonder if 2016 could be the year their team wins a national championship.

And then there’s the Heisman Trophy, college football’s most prestigious reward for individual accomplishment. Last year, Alabama’s Derrick Henry ran away with the award, besting Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson in the final vote. Henry has since declared for the NFL Draft, so we know he won’t be in contention to repeat this season… who can we expect to see in New York this winter, then?

Here are the 10 most likely candidates.
