A look at several matches rumored to be in the works for WWE Payback 2016

In the wake of WrestleMania 32, all of the recent call-ups from NXT to the main roster, and much more, how WWE builds toward WWE Payback 2016 is going to be incredibly interesting. There are a lot of ways that they could go, but what they ultimately do leading up to and on the May 1 pay-per-view show remains to be seen.

What we do know about Payback 2016 right now is that Roman Reigns will be defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the first time since winning the title at Mania against AJ Styles. Styles won the right to be the No. 1 Contender on the RAW after WrestleMania, so that seems to be the direction they’re moving barring an added participant. Moreover, it seems that Charlotte will defend the newly minted Women’s Championship against Natalya after what we saw on RAW.

However, it appears that there is more coming than just that as there are several matches rumored to be in the works for WWE Payback 2016, per the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Chris Jericho vs Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn, The Wyatt Family vs League of Nations, The Dudley Boyz vs Enzo Amore & Big Cass, and Emma vs Becky Lynch are all in the works for the Payback pay-per-view.

Considering that the first pay-per-view after Mania traditionally features a lot of matches from WrestleMania being run back, it’s refreshing to see WWE moving forward in a number of areas on this rumored card.

Other things of note are the fact that recent NXT call-up Baron Corbin doesn’t have a match on this rumored card and neither does Apollo Crews or The Vaudevillains. Subsequently, it’ll be interesting to see how WWE works in that regard.
