Robert Lewandowski’s second half header vs Atletico Madrid kept Bayern Munich alive in the Champions League

Bayern Munich looked to basically be dead and gone in regards to their Champions League lives in the second half of the second leg against Atletico Madrid. Bayern entered the matchup down 1-0 on aggregate and, though they scored first on a free kick, fell even further behind on an Antonie Griezmann goal that gave Atletico the 2-1 lead on aggregate and an all important away goal. Robert Lewandowski wasn’t about to let his Bayern Munich side crumble in the final moments, though.

David Alaba got the ball just outside the box on the left hand side of the pitch and looked to make a play into the box. He delivered a strong cross to the far post where Arturo Vidal made a perfect run and perfectly timed jump to get his head on the ball and then play another ball back across the front of the net to the other post. That’s where Lewandowski was making his run past Diego Godin into space and delivered a strong header into the back of the net to give his side new life:

"It’s on! Lewandowski has Bayern sniffing at another comeback in the #UCL knockout stage. Can Atletico hold on? https://t.co/rFcezEzHfu— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) May 3, 2016"

Lewandowski has been scoring goals all year for Bayern, but none have been nearly as important as that. Without that header from Lewandowksi, the German giants are all but eliminated from the Champions League. At the very least, his goal gave them hope that they might survive.
