Nine time French Open champion Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the 2016 event following a wrist injury that wouldn’t allow him to continue.

In his history of being a professional tennis player, Rafael Nadal has had more success at the French Open than at any other Grand Slam event. Nine times before, it has been Nadal who was crowned the champion at the end of the two week event inside Roland Garros.

There won’t be a 10th championship being won in 2016 as Nadal is making an early exit from the event following an injury that he wasn’t able to play through:

Rafael Nadal made history earlier in the week when he won his 200th career Grand Slam match with a second round victory, becoming just the eight male tennis player to reach that level. Overall, Nadal has won 14 Grand Slam titles, tying him with Pete Sampras for the second most of all time (trailing Roger Federer’s 17 titles).

Nadal was the fourth seed in this year’s tournament and his exit opens the door for other top stars to get a chance at the title. One of those is top seed Novak Djokovic, who is looking to win the French Open for the first time in his career (losing last year in the final).
