Dallas Cowboys rejected trade offers for Darren McFadden, Alfred Morris

Despite receiving offers, the Dallas Cowboys are not interested in trading their depth at running back.

After selecting running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, many figured fellow backs Darren McFadden and even recent free agent signing Alfred Morris would now be on the trading block. Apparently, other NFL teams thought the same thing, but Jerry Jones is not interested in dealing away his depth at the position.

According to Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram, the Cowboys’ owner has received calls about their running backs. “We got calls during the draft asking to trade for a couple of our running backs, and we just don’t have that interest,” Jones said.

Despite McFadden’s successful debut campaign for the Cowboys last season, Elliott is going to come in and be their starter in 2016. He is an elite-level talent at the running back position and the Cowboys would not have taken him if they did not see him coming in and making an impact right away.

The selection of Elliott was a bit controversial, considering the running back position has been devalued in recent years. Many believed that the Cowboys would have been better off taking an elite-level defensive player like DB Jalen Ramsey.

With the Cowboys’ incredible offensive line, pretty much anybody can go back there and be a productive back. McFadden proved that last season. While Elliott has an upside that somebody like McFadden simply cannot reach, they would have been a productive unit no matter who they put back there.

With that in mind, we all know that Elliott is going to be the primary back for the Cowboys in 2016. Not capitalizing on the expected increase value of McFadden, in particular, seems crazy to me, but this is Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys we are talking about.
