Kevin Durant is considering joining the Golden State Warriors this summer for an interesting reason: he’s interested in what Silicon Valley has to offer.

According to Golden State Warriors Fast Break, Oklahoma City Thunder small forward Kevin Durant not only would consider joining the Golden State Warriors because of point guard Stephen Curry in 2016 NBA free agency, but he sees advantages beyond basketball with all that Silicon Valley has to offer.

Keep in mind that Durant is signed to a progressive agency in Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, an upstart sports agency that loves to sign athletes that think differently. All-Star second baseman with the New York Yankees Robinson Cano of Roc Nation signed a 10-year deal with the lowly Seattle Mariners to expand his brand with baseball crazy Japan. Seattle remains an immensely popular baseball market in Japan because of Ichiro Suzuki.

While most athletes in the United States want to transition into careers like film, television, and even music once their athletic career comes to an end, perhaps it is tech that will be the new route that players with entrepreneurial tendencies choose to gravitate towards.

The tech industry continues to thrive in the Bay Area and perhaps Durant wants to stake a claim in that industry as somewhat of an angel investor once his career comes to a close. He may not have a friend back in Washington, DC that will have an earth-shattering idea for a tech startup, but the likelihood of him finding that partner in the Bay Area is far better if he does become an NBA champion for the Warriors over these next few years.
