The Buffalo Sabres are reportedly having discussions with the Anaheim Ducks about trading for defenseman Cam Fowler.

It’s no secret that the Buffalo Sabres are in pursuit of left-handed defensemen this offseason. The Sabres plan to address that need at some point and they could address it very soon. Buffalo and the Anaheim Ducks are reportedly discussing a trade that would send Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler to Buffalo.

Buffalo and the Anaheim Ducks are reportedly discussing a trade that would send Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler to Buffalo.

While the Sabres have expressed a willingness to move their eighth overall pick for a left-handed defenseman, it is not likely that they will trade their eighth overall pick for someone like Fowler. Fowler is 24 years old. In 414 career games (all with the Ducks), Fowler has 34 goals and 144 assists for 178 points.

Fowler has two years remaining on his five-year contract and has a $4 million cap hit. The budget conscious Ducks could be willing to part with Fowler who has not lived up to expectations as a 12th overall pick.

What kind of return would the Sabres be able to offer the Ducks for Fowler? A forward who is in the same boat as Fowler – Tyler Ennis. Ennis has a $4.6 million cap hit over the next three seasons.

Due to the emergence of Sam Reinhart and the arrival of Evander Kane, Ennis has found himself outside of the top six forward spot that he had when he signed his extension. Anaheim desperately needs to add some forwards to their lineup and Ennis is certainly a talented one. While Ennis was limited to just 23 games and 11 points last season, he had consecutive 20 goal seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
