Free agency is rapidly approaching in the NBA and that means that players are about to find themselves a new home. With the NBA salary cap having a sharp increase this year, plenty of teams are going to be able to throw a lot of money at top free agents.

One team that is poised to have an interesting free agency is the Dallas Mavericks. After making the playoffs yet again last season, the Mavericks want to make sure that they continue to remain as competitive as possible as long as Dirk Nowitzki remains on the roster.

It appears that they have a couple of players in mind for free agency. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon and Marc Stein, the Mavericks plan to target center Hassan Whiteside and point guard Mike Conley.

"The Dallas Mavericks expect to be granted a meeting in the opening hours of free agency with Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside, one of the Mavericks’ two primary targets this summer, sources told ESPN.com.Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley is the other top target for the Mavs, according to sources, as Dallas attempts to construct a core that will allow the franchise to be competitive during veteran Dirk Nowitzki’s twilight and beyond."

If the Mavericks do indeed get a meeting with Whiteside as soon as free agency begins, then there stands a strong chance that they will indeed be able to land the free agent center. He will have plenty of suitors, but the Mavericks have shown that they are relentless in pursuit of top players around the league.

If they could also grab Mike Conley, then suddenly, the Mavericks have a strong team that is going to be built around for the near future. However, considering the luck they have had in free agency before, it’s likely no one is holding their breath in Dallas.
