According to a report, free agent forward Troy Brouwer has agreed to a four-year deal with the Calgary Flames.

Troy Brouwer became one of the most coveted free agent forwards for the 2016 offseason thanks to a strong performance in the playoffs for the St. Louis Blues. He has parlayed that success into a big deal as the Calgary Flames have reportedly agreed to a four-year deal with Brouwer, according to Bob McKenzie.

Brouwer should upgrade the Flames wherever he plays. His blue-collar approach to hockey makes him a fine fit on just about any forward line. With 294 points (150 goals and 144 assists) in 613 games, Brouwer certainly has skill. He’s coming off an 18 goal and 39 point season for the St. Louis Blues. Brouwer added eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 20 playoff games for the Blues, helping them advance to the Western Conference Finals.

Brouwer is a very useful player. He can kill penalties and is a solid net presence on the power play. However, one can’t help but think that the Flames overpaid for Brouwer, especially considering his age. The Flames will get value for him for the first two years at least, but the last two years could get really ugly if he keeps aging like he has.
