A very strange week in the Big 12 is only getting stranger. The president of the University of Texas endorsed Houston as a candidate for expansion.

The saga of the Big 12 has always been a strange one, and this week has been no different. Earlier in the week, the Big 12 was likely to not expand. Until a report came out that they weren’t completely tabling the discussion.

Today, the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, made a bold move endorsing Houston for Big XII expansion. The pseudo-patented insanity of the Big XII continued when the president of the University of Texas chimed in, voicing his support also.

The rest of the Big 12 might have real, money-based reasons to not support Houston coming to the Big 12, but Fenves knows an important fact: no matter what, Texas is fine.

If the Big 12 adds Houston and it works, Texas officials will be diving into enough money to make Pablo Escobar take notice. If the Big 12 adds Houston and it doesn’t work, Texas officials will still be diving into enough money to make Pablo Escobar take notice. Texas is one of the few schools that will be completely unaffected by the Big 12 dissolving. They have the network and the money to remain independent for a long time, and the clout of the school will ensure that the Pac-12 and the SEC come calling.

Texas is under no obligation to care what happens to the rest of the schools in the Big 12. If everything sinks, they have a life raft crusted with diamonds and chilled Fiji water waiting for them.
