After the NBA’s decision to move the All-Star Game from Charlotte next year, the ACC plans to keep their title game there despite a controversial law.

For the past six seasons, the ACC has held their annual football championship game at Bank of America Stadium, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was no big deal for teams and conferences to play in the Tar Heel State – until a recent bill that has started a gigantic controversy.

The passing of HB2, a bill that mandated transgender people use the bathroom of their birth and not their current identity in public locations has been the subject of debate from those who thinks it’s discriminatory and those who think it will keep people, particularly kids, safe.

Thursday, the NBA announced they were going to move their All-Star Weekend next season from Charlotte as a result of that bill. The ACC, which had discussed the idea in the past, has decided to keep things the same for the time being, according to NBC Sports’ College Football Talk:

"“We had a long discussion about this issue in May at our spring meetings, and at that time made the determination as to where our championships would be held for the ’16-17 year,” commissioner John Swofford told ESPN.“Right now what our schools want to do is to see how this plays out and where it ends up, because it’s still in process to one degree or another and the courts may well ultimately decide that.”"

Swofford, addressing the subject at the conference’s annual Media Days also being held in Charlotte, said the issue could be addressed for future title games at meetings being held in October.

The ACC, headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, held the first five football championship games in the state of Florida (three in Jacksonville, two in Tampa) before moving to the more centrally located Charlotte before the 2010 season.
