Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer is confused as to why the New York Jets have not come to terms on a deal with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

33-year-old Ryan Fitzpatrick will come into the 2016-17 NFL season off his best season ever as a starting quarterback. The former Harvard grad went 10-6 as a starter for the New York Jets in 2015, throwing for 3,905 yards, 31 touchdowns and had the Jets on the cusp of the playoffs last season.

But, he and the Jets have yet to agree on a new contract and that has Carson Palmer confused.

Palmer, an older gunslinger in his own right in the NFL, spoke with ESPN’s Rich Cimini about the Fitzpatrick contract situation and made his case for Fitzpatrick and a new deal while playing in a celebrity golf tournament with Fitzpatrick in Nevada.

"“I don’t know the exact numbers [of the offer], but I know Ryan very well,” Palmer said. “He’s a good friend of mine, he’s an ex-teammate of mine, and I know what he means to a locker room. I know what he means on the field.“He’s been a great player for them,” Palmer continued. “I hope they take care of him the way they should because he means so much to that team. That team wants him there, and they have a legit shot with him at quarterback.”"

The Jets report to training camp on July 27 and the two sides are nowhere near getting a deal done for this season. Fitzpatrick has a three-year, $24 million offer on the table from the Jets, but that doesn’t look like that’s going to be enough for Fitzpatrick to come around and sign the dotted line.

If Fitzpatrick doesn’t agree on a deal, the much-maligned Geno Smith will take over the top spot atop the Jets’ quarterback depth chart.
