Safety Taylor Mays has officially been released by the Cincinnati Bengals.

On Saturday evening, the Bengals officially announced that they have released safety Taylor Mays from the team. The news comes just a few months after Mays had been brought back for a deal with the team.

The veteran safety from USC entered the league in 2010 and started his career with the 49ers for a season before heading to Cincinnati from 2011 through 2014. He would go on to bounce around from the Vikings to the Lions and the Oakland Raiders in 2015, before being brought back to Cincy.

For the 2015 season, Mays was in 14 games total with the Raiders. He would start five of those games for the team. Over the course of his career, he’s racked up 89 tackles and just one sack with no interceptions to his name.

Back in March of this year, Mays was suspended for four games due to his violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. While Cincinnati added him in April, they’ve now released him right before NFL training camp gets going. He has been given praise due to having size and coverage ability, so it won’t be surprising to see another team add him to their roster this season.

Of note, the latest move has trimmed the Bengals roster down to a total of 88 players out of the 90-man total, so expect to hear more from Cincy as they look to get themselves ready for another run at the NFL postseason in 2016-17.
