After 2016, when will the next Summer Olympics be held?

Every four years, a different location around the world will host the Summer Olympics. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is the host of this year’s edition, as it is about to get underway in just over a week. But the question is, where will the Summer Olympics head to after Rio?

The answer to that would be Tokyo, Japan. While the decision was made back in 2013 via electoral ballot, it is now the next stop on the Summer Olympics agenda after Rio. In fact, it will be the second of three consecutive Olympics stops to move across Asia. The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in PyeongChang, the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, then Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

An estimated 206 nations are expected to be involved at Tokyo, when festivities kick off July 24, 2020. Istanbul and Madrid were also in the running to host, but were eventually outvoted. A bid from Rome was withdrawn. The official Olympics website for Tokyo has high hopes for the event.

"According to the organizers of the event in 2020, the Games of the XXXII Olympiad of the modern era will be the most innovative ever organised, and will rest on three fundamental principles to transform the world: striving for your personal best (achieving your personal best); accepting one another (unity in diversity); and passing on a legacy for the future (connecting to tomorrow)."

Koji Murofushi, who is now the sports director for the 2020 organizing committee, has noted that Tokyo is a safe and secure city and that athletes will enjoy both the competition scene and when they’re relaxing.
